Richard-the-Lionheart Route
This route links the 11th/12th century castles, fortresses and sites Richard I would have known. They remain as a symbol of the incessant struggle between the Dukes of Aquitaine and the Kings of France. The trial leads from Rochebrune, then Rochechouart, Les salles-Lavauguyon, Brie, Montbrun, Châlus-Chabrol, Chalus-Maulmont, les Cars, Lastours, Nexon, Chalard, Jumilhac, Cite of Yrieix-la-Perche, Coussac-Bonneval , Cite of Segar, and to D’arnac-Pompadour. At Chalus-Chabrol Richard the Lionheart was shot by a bolt from a longbowman during the siege of the castle, on March 26th 1199. He died of gangrene on April 6th, with his mother Eleanor at his bedside. During the summer months many of these castles organise special events, exhibitions and concerts.
