REGIONAL AREA
In the Limousin
The Limousin lies on the west side of the Massif Central on a wide zone of Archaen and primary rocks, the highest point being around 1,000 metres, falling gently to 350 metres. Named after the Lémovices, the Celtic tribe occupying the region at the time of the Gauls. It now consists of three departments, the Haute-Vienne, Corrèze, and Creuse. These excellent French websites have detailed information of places and activities of interest throughout the Limousin region.

The Haute-Vienne in the Limousin

The La Maison Rose is situated just North of Limoges, in the department of the Haute-Vienne. A region of open countryside, with Limoges as its capital, stretches westwards from the flanks of the Massif Central mountain range.

Limoges

Capital of the region, it is a fascinating historic city. In the course of two thousand years of history, the city has grown up around two different centres. In the Cite around the Cathedral of St.Etienne, terraced gardens and an exceptional botanical collection overlook the Vienne river, and cobble-stoned streets are lined with gothic arcades and half-timbered houses. And on the site of what was once Saint Martial castle, now the main shopping centre and prime site for public services.

We have visited Limoges on many occasions with family and friends and found it alive with art galleries, museums, theatre, opera, markets, historical sites, gardens, porcelain factories, great for shopping and eating out or simply a picnic near the river. The two websites are very informative on the city of Limoges.
